Leland “Lee” Walter Nicol, age 89, of Savanna, Illinois died Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at his home. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna. A visitation will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2014 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will take place in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Savanna.
Leland was born January 23, 1925 to Albert and Ida (Nobis) Nicol in Arenzville, Illinois. He graduated from Arenzville High School in 1942. He was drafted into the United States Army on May 13, 1943 as a Heavy Equipment Operator in the 1896th Army Engineers Division. While he was in the service, Lee’s family moved to Savanna to operate the Nicol Sand Company. Leland went overseas to his first combat area in Lae, New Guinea, then Biak, Indonesia. He was wounded when the ship transporting his Company was hit by a kamikaze. He was picked up in the South China Sea and was hospitalized for nine weeks in Hollandia, New Guinea. He rejoined his Company in Luzon, Philippines and was sent to Japan with the Occupation Troops after the end of the war. He was honorably discharged on December 16, 1945, and returned to Savanna with a Bronze Battle Star, and a Purple Heart Medal. Lee worked his entire life for the Sand Company, that grew from Nicol Sand Company and then bought by Lockheed-Martin. His work took him to Oregon, Illinois, as well as Stevensville, Michigan where they lived for 37 years.
Lee married Clarice Schadewald on November 10, 1945 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. They celebrated 67 years of marriage, during which time they were blessed with two children, Nancy Lee (Richard) Ebeling of Cedarburg, Wisconsin and Mark David (LuAnn) Nicol of Austin, Texas. They have 6 grandchildren, Raschel Nicol Harbison, Heather Ebeling (Richard) Kretz, Kristi Nicol (Chance) Swice, Jonathan (Emily) Ebeling, Sarah Ebeling (William) Vanasse, and Derek Nicol; and 9 great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Ayden, Evan, Jayden, Izzabella, Josiah, Gabriella, Lilliana, and Madelyn.
Lee retired from Lockeed-Martin Corporation after 41 years. He was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Curch, the American Legion, V.F.W., and the DAV.
