Leland Leon Kerkove., age 73, of North Freedom, Wisconsin, died Monday, March 20, 2006 at his home. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, Illinois. Burial will take place in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Savanna, Illinois. Friends may call from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 25, 2006 at the Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established in Leland’s name.
Leland was born May 21, 1932 in Haysville, Iowa, the son of Leland Sr. and Henriette (Schumaker) Kerkove. He married Blanche Tack on July 24, 1953 in Savanna, IL. Leland graduated from Savanna High School in 1950. He worked for local farmers starting at age thirteen. Leland also sat pins at the local bowling alley, worked at the old Savanna Ice House, and at the Savanna Army Depot. Leland was a commercial fisherman. He worked for fifteen years at Interstate Power in Savanna and Dubuque, Iowa in addition to farming for himself with the help of his wife. Leland started working at Ho-Chunk Casino in the janitorial department in August 2003, and continued to work there until his death.
Leland enjoyed hunting and fishing, morel mushroom finding, and playing cards. Most of all he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandson.
Leland will be dearly missed by his wife, Blanche; one daughter, Kelly Robinson of Hillpoint, Wisconsin, five grandchildren, Amy (Gary) Ward of Blue River, Wisconsin, Kate, Zarah, Mary and John Robinson of Hillpoint, Wisconsin; one great-grandson, Josiah Ward of Blue River, Wisconsin.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
