Lawrence “Larry” William Nigus, 90, of Fulton, Illinois, died Monday, July 29, 2013 at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:00a.m. Saturday, August 3, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, with Reverend Nancy Wilkinson officiating. A visitation will be held 10:00am- 11:00am, prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Savanna Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to local charities.
Larry was born June 18, 1923, the son of Lucian and Ida (Hatfield) Nigus, in Atchison, Kansas. He graduated with honors from Dawn High School with the Class of 1940. Larry worked as a chief dispatcher for the Milwaukee Railroad in Savanna, Illinois. He retired as a Director of Locomotive Operations Control Center in Chicago, Illinois. On June 19, 1949 he married Shirley Bashaw. They were happily married for 64 years.
Larry proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Community United Church of Christ where he served as a board member on the Christian Board of Education. Larry served a term on the school board for Chestnut Park Grade School. Larry was an avid Bears and Cubs fan. He also followed college sports. Larry enjoyed playing golf and gardening.
Larry will be dearly missed by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; his son, Thomas Nigus of Berlin, Wisconsin; his daughter, Sherry Hall of Phoenix, Arizona; two grandsons, Scott and Samuel Hall and one brother, Marion (Mary) Nigus of Chillicothe, Missouri.
Larry was preceded in death by both parents; two sisters, Alice and Esther; and five brothers, Clarence, Harold, Freddie, Ralph, and Raymond.
