Lawrence Arthur Hiher

Lawrence Arthur Hiher, age 86 of Savanna, Illinois, died on Friday, July 31, 2009 at the Carroll County Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Mount Carroll. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, August 6, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna. Burial will take place in the St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Savanna. A visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at the church with a Rosary Service held at 7:00 p.m.

Lawrence was born on February 7, 1923, the son of Arthur and Mildred (Tyler) Hiher in Savanna. He graduated from Savanna High School with the Class of 1941. After graduation, Lawrence served his country in the United States Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 – 1946.

Lawrence worked as a rate clerk for Carstensen Freight Line, Clinton, Iowa and the Milwaukee Railroad Yard in Savanna for several years. He was a member of the Savanna American Legion Post VanBibber-Hansen #148 and was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Lawrence was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts of America and served as an adult leader for 29 years. He was also a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he was active in the church choir. Lawrence enjoyed the outdoors and riding his bike. He would always shake your hand when he met you and would end your visit by saying “God Bless You”.

Lawrence is survived by one brother; Edward Hiher of Savanna; one sister, Doris (Edward) Urbanik of Winchester, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.
