Larry was born on March 13, 1922, the son of Andrew and Mary (Trude) Green in Savanna. He attended Savanna High School before joining the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. While working in the corps, he followed his older brothers to Nevada and built dams. Larry moved back to Savanna and worked at the Savanna Army Depot for one year before enlisting in the United States Army.
During his enlistment he began as a cook for nurses in Indiana and ended up as a rifleman in the 106th infantry. During a fierce battle, the Germans were able to penetrate and wedge themselves in the division front line. This is when Larry was captured and became a P.O.W. for the next five months. The prisoners were liberated in 1945 and shortly thereafter were flown back to the United States. Larry was decorated with several medals. These medals included the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Two Silver Stars.
After he was discharged, he again went to work for the Savanna Army Depot, before becoming a Carman for the Milwaukee Railroad until his retirement in 1978. Larry married Lottie Louise on May 10, 1946 in Clinton, Iowa. Lottie died December 30, 1998. After retirement he continued to work as a custodian at the Blackhawk Area Credit Union for ten years. He enjoyed attending auctions, estate sales, and flea markets and was an avid antique collector, especially railroad lanterns. Larry loved railroad memorabilia and at the age of 81 he built his first model train layout.
