Lavine S. Schumacher, age 93, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away, July 10, 2017, at Morrison Community Hospital. Cremation rites have been accorded. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 28, 2017 at Savanna Township Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in her memory.
Lavine was born October 17, 1923, the son of Otto and Romelda (Juenger) Christen in Texas. She attended and graduated from Texas schools. Lavine married John “Jack” Schumacher and were married for 22 years until Jack’s death.
Lavine worked on the family farm in Texas, where she cooked for the United States Army. Lavine later worked at the Eaton Corporation for 23 years. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, being outdoors, and going on motorcycle rides. Lavine also loved trains and enjoyed talking to the railroad employees. She would give them fresh vegetables out of her garden, and they would give her rides on the trains. Lavine always looked forward to the Christmas Trains annual visit to Savanna. She always loved listening to the music and watching as the families would gather with their children.
Lavine will be missed by her two sons, James Collins and Dennis Collins; grandchildren; two brothers, Melton and Melroy Christen; seven nieces and nephews, Beverly Tack of Savanna, Illinois, Richard (Ruth) McColley of Hanover, Illinois, Patsy (Bob) Benell of Lanark, Illinois, Angie (Charles) Williams of Elvira, Iowa, Jane Rassmussen of Thomson, Illinois, Joan (Larry) Beilema of Thomson, Illinois, and Peggy Sue (Keith) Chapman of Savanna, Illinois; and one special neighbor, Cora.
Lavine was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jack; one niece, Mona McColley; five nephews, James, John, Bill, and Bob McColley, and one in infancy; and Robert Rassmussen.
