Laverta “Jeanne” Harris, age 89, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017 at the Good Samaritan Society, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 17, 2017, at York Community Church, Thomson. Burial will take place in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 prior to the service at the Church.
Laverta was born September 22, 1927, the daughter of Leamon and Lena (Atherton) Swett on the family farm in York Township. She attended Thomson York Community High School and graduated with the Class of 1945. Laverta married Garland Harris on January 21, 1946. They celebrated 24 years of marriage until Garland’s death in 1970.
Laverta worked as Administrative Assistant for the Superintendent of the East Moline State Mental Hospital for a number of years. She later worked in the Personnel Office of the Savanna Army Depot for 15 years. Laverta was a member of the York Community Church in Thomson. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and bowling. Her cats were her life, and she loved them dearly.
Laverta will be dearly missed by two sons, Robert Harris of Clearwater, Florida, and Dave Harris of Manlius, New York; one grandson; one granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; one brother Gerald (Jeannine) Swett of Hanover, Illinois and one sister Norma (Gary) Lehr of Orfordville, Wisconsin. Laverta is preceded in death by her husband, Garland; her parents, Leamon and Lena; two sisters; Hazel Diestelmeier, Betty Traum and one brother, Harold.?
