LaVern N. Thillmony, age 83 of Spragueville, Iowa, died Friday, February 4, 2011 at Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, Iowa. Burial will take place in the Center Grove Cemetery, Goose Lake, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston.
LaVern was born on February 27, 1927, the son of Nicholas A. and Minnie E. (Bahr) Thillmony in Spragueville, Iowa. He attended Fairfield Country School #3 in rural Spragueville. Starting at a young age, Lavern farmed on the family farm in rural Spragueville. Lavern was drafted into the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. After he was discharged, LaVern came home and again began farming on the family farm. LaVern married Wilma C. Hoenicke on May 23, 1953 in the Zion Lutheran Church, Clinton, Iowa.
LaVern was a member of the Spragueville American Legion for thirty-five years and was active with the Spragueville Community Center. He also enjoyed tractor pulls and going dancing with his wife, Wilma. LaVern also cherished spending time visiting with family and friends. He was always there to lend a helping hand and could sit and visit with anyone. Most of all, LaVern loved spending time with his family on the farm.
Lavern will be dearly missed by his wife, Wilma of Spragueville; two daughters, Sandy Sander of Maquoketa, Iowa and Laurie Brandenburg of Tipton, Iowa; one son, Scott Thillmony of Spragueville; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Jessica Sander and Stephen and Audrey Brandenburg; two sisters in-law, Nancy Thillmony of Elephant Butte, New Mexico and Bernita Wing of Clinton, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
LaVern was preceded in death by his parents; one grand daughter, Taylor Thillmony; two sisters, Leota Fowler and Doris Hankemeier; and three brothers, Dwain, Ralph and Lyle Thillmony.
