LaVern F. Koester, age 96 of Elizabeth, Illinois, passed away on Tuesday, July 31, 2007 at Galena-Stauss Hospital, Galena, Illinois. Funeral Services will be held 2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 2, 2007 at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elizabeth with Reverend Kenneth Arndt officiating.

Friends may call from 1:00-2:30 p.m. Thursday, August 2, 2007 at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Elizabeth. Memorials may be made to the Dubuque Iowa Hospice, 2255 JFK Road, Dubuque, IA 52002.

LaVern was born on December 24, 1910, the youngest son of Henry and Amanda (Hammer) Koester in Guilford Township, Scales Mound, Illinois. He was confirmed April 10, 1927 at Saint John Lutheran Church in Guilford Township . On February 27, 1935, LaVern married Lucille Miller in Schapville, Illinois, to this union was born four children.

LaVern farmed in Guilford and Thompson Townships until 1971, when he sold the family farm and moved to Elizabeth, where he and his wife of seventy-two years currently live. After moving to Elizabeth, LaVern helped his son farm for the next ten years. LaVern enjoyed gardening and lawn work; he was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors. LaVern is a member of the Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elizabeth.

LaVern is survived by his wife, Lucille; two daughters, Pearl (Eugene) McKee of Warren, Illinois and Mildred (Jimmy) Steffes of Elizabeth; one son, Myron (Phyllis) Koester of Elizabeth; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son; two grandsons; two brothers, Les and Clyde Koester and one sister, Goldie Wills.
