Larry "Squeak" Papke

Larry “Squeak” Papke, 70, loving Father and Grandfather, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, with visitation prior to the service, 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Burial with Military Rites will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. A luncheon will follow at the Sabula VFW. Family and friends are invited to share in Larry’s life at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com .

Larry was born September 14, 1948 in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Paul “Junior” and Betty (Weets) Papke. He grew up on the family farm near Sabula and was a 1966 graduate of the Miles High School. Larry was drafted into the Army and served as an MP at Fort Knox, Kentucky until 1970. Farming was in his blood and he returned to the family farm near Sabula, where he enjoyed being outdoors and working the farm. Larry loved spending time in the woods and cutting timber, and filling ammo reloads for family and friends. He was known to enjoy blowing things up, on the job, or on the farm. Larry was a loyal friend to many.

He worked at the Savanna Army Depot, starting in Security, then becoming an Ammunition Specialist, working at the Depot until its close. Larry then worked for BWC Trucking in Clinton until 2016.

Larry will be dearly missed by two sons, Rick ( Tamara Papke of Orchard Park, New York and Chad Papke of Preston; five grandchildren, Brock, Haley, Brett, Jesse and Blake; a special friend and companion, Aleda Lohmeier of Sabula; and five step-children, Ray Lee (James) Goethals of Bennett, Iowa, Lauren (Ron) Tappan of Texas, Dawn (James) Phillips of Sabula, DeeVon (Lee) Tappan of Mississippi, and Bobbi Lohmeier of Tipton, Iowa.
