Larry Dale Betz, a legendary hunter and beloved member of the community, passed away Friday, March 29, 2024 at home, rural Rock Falls, Illinois He was in the loving care of family and hospice. Born on February 6, 1939, in Columbia, Missouri, Larry lived a life filled with adventure, passion, and remarkable achievements.
Larry's journey began in Galesburg, Illinois, where he attended Galesburg High School, graduating with the class of 1957. It was during his formative years that Larry's love for the outdoors and hunting began to blossom, setting the stage for a lifetime of extraordinary pursuits.
A true master of the wild, Larry earned a reputation as a legendary hunter, renowned for his skill and expertise in guiding and organizing bear hunts. His adventures took him to the farthest reaches of the continent, from the rugged wilderness of Manitoba and Saskatchewan to the untamed forests of Quebec. Over the course of his hunting career, Larry harvested an impressive array of game, including 30 bears, 200 deer, 3 moose, 2 caribou, 1 elk, 1 buffalo, 1 wolf, and numerous wild boar. His encounters with wildlife were not without peril, as evidenced by the time a bear pulled him from a tree stand, a testament to Larry's unwavering courage and determination.
In 1986, Larry pursued his passion for archery by founding the Archer Den-Pro Shop. What began as a hobby quickly evolved into his livelihood, providing a gathering place for fellow enthusiasts and aspiring hunters alike. Prior to this endeavor, Larry had worked for American Family Insurance, but it was his entrepreneurial spirit and love for the sport that led him to establish his own business.
An adventurous soul by nature, Larry was also drawn to the thrill of stock car racing and skydiving, demonstrating his fearless approach to life and his willingness to embrace new challenges. (Until he landed face-down in pig manure while skydiving!)
If you were looking for Larry, you could often find him at the closest poker table wearing a black cowboy hat and boots. It was at the poker table that he met the love of his life.
