Kenneth “Ken” Smith, age 88, of Thomson, Illinois, died Sunday, March 24, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Society, Mt. Carroll, Illinois with his wife, Lois by his side. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 30, 2019 at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 9-11:00 prior to the service at the church. Burial with military rites will take place in Savanna Township Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established in Ken's name.
Ken was born June 8, 1930, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Joseph and Helen (Monahan) Smith. He attended college, then went on to serve in the Army National Guard from 1948-52, serving 18 months in Germany. Ken married Lois Haring on January 31, 1970. Together they celebrated 49 years of marriage.
Ken worked as a food service manager for United Airlines for 38 years until his retirement in 1989. During his time with United, he worked in Philadelphia, Chicago, and Honolulu. Ken and Lois relocated to Thomson after his retirement. Ken was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Savanna VFW and American Legion. He was an avid golfer, sports fan, and loved taking rides with Lois.
Ken will be dearly missed by his wife, Lois; one daughter, Karen (Jerry) Strianese of Atco, New Jersey; a son, Kenny Smith of Lindenwold, New Jersey; a grandson, Frank (Lauren) Scales; a great-grandson, Frank Jacob; one brother, R. Alan (Joan) Smith of Blue Bell, Pennsylvania; a sister, Dorothy (John) Donahue of New Town Square, Pennsylvania; 36 nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and nephews.
Ken is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Helen; two brothers, Joe (Kay) Smith and Donald (Marj) Smith; and two sisters, Rosemary (Charles) Craig and Eleanor (John) Clark.
