Kenneth E. Gray, age 87, of rural Sabula, Iowa, passed away on June 18, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, Iowa. Pastor Robert Krueger will officiate. Burial will be in Sterling Cemetery, rural Sabula, Iowa. Friends may call from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2006 at Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Preston, Iowa. Kenneth was born on June 26, 1918 near Sabula, Iowa, the son of John and Luella (Taplin) Gray. He married Vera Hunemiller on October 22, 1942. Kenneth graduated from Miles High School with the class of 1935. Throughout his entire life, Kenneth lived and farmed on the original Gray homestead where he was born.
Kenneth was a longtime member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula and served on many church committees. He was a member of Izaak Walton League for over fifty years, holding the offices of treasurer and secretary. He was a Jackson County Committeeman for American Soil Conservation Service for thirty-five years, from 1937-1972. He was an assistant leader of the Andover Boy Scout Troop #25, and was active in the Band Boosters Association for Miles Schools.
After retiring from farming in 1980, Kenneth worked at Wayne Feeds for five years and at Feeder’s Supply of Miles for five years. He enjoyed gardening, flowers, and woodcrafting. He loved giving his wood crafts to people who stopped by to visit.
Kenneth will be deeply missed by his wife, Vera; one daughter, Norma (James) Emerson of Tavares, Florida; one son, Richard Gray of Austin, Texas; one brother, Clifton (Mary) Gray of Miles, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
Kenneth is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Glen, Chester and Lorraine; and two sisters, Ramona and Thelma.
