Kay R. Hoffmann, age 40, of Spragueville, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 1, 2008, at the Finley Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 5, 2008, from 2 – 6 p.m. at the Miller – Law – Jones Funeral Home in Preston, Iowa. Private services will be held on Monday, October 6, 2008. Burial will follow in the Buckhorn Cemetery, rural Maquoketa, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Camp Hertko Hollow in Boone, Iowa.
Kay was born September 14, 1968, in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Marlin and Nola Jean (Struble) Hoffmann. Kay was a 10 year 4 – H member of the Real Farmers Daughters. She graduated from Preston High School in 1987, then went on to graduate from Ellsworth Community College at Iowa Falls, Iowa, where she was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Fraternity, majoring in human services.
Kay had worked at the Prairie House, D.A.C., the Maquoketa Library and volunteered at the Preston Library, where she enjoyed reading to children. Kay was a member of the North Bend Community Group and New Hope Organ Transplant Support Group.
Since the age of ten, Kay attended Camp Hertko Hollow near Boone, Iowa, a camp for diabetic children. Later, she served as a counselor at the camp for over fifteen years. She had the patience and ability to work with the mentally and physically challenged. She also gave talks on organ donation. Her hobbies included reading, creative writing and sewing. She loved animals, especially cats and dogs.
Kay is survived by her father Marlin D. Hoffmann of Spragueville; three aunts, Darlene (Kenneth) Jefferies, Joy Eads, and Marie Hoffmann; several cousins; and special friends Nancy Ahlborn, Caroline Bredekamp, and Lisa Elias.
Kay was preceded in death by her mother Nola Jean Hoffmann; her grandparents, two uncles, and a cousin.
