A devoted wife, loving daughter, caring mother, adoring sister, and best friend. Karen lived each and every day with a kind heart and positive attitude. She touched the lives of so many, inspiring everyone with her unprecedented strength and extraordinary courage. Her gorgeous smile and upbeat personality fills every room and memory. Everyone who knew her, knows she was a master planner whether it was traveling across the country, throwing a huge party, being the maid-of-honor in a wedding, or just planning a night out. She went big and made sure those around her were having the best time. Our fashionista would even put on her sparkly high heels and sing some karaoke for us. She loved the quote, “You can never be overdressed or overeducated” by Oscar Wilde. It’s a great quote to describe our super intelligent, best dressed wife, daughter, mother, sister, and friend.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Joshua; eighteen-month-old daughter, Sofia; mother and step-father, Sonia and Carlos Bras; brother, Carlos Eduardo and Emanoella Lacerda; four nieces and nephews, Luis, Mario, Gabriel and Elias; and many extended family and friends. Karen is preceded in death by her father, Claudio Lacerda.
Karen was born June 12, 1979 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the daughter of Claudio and Sonia (Novaes) Lacerda. She was baptized by her grandfather in 1980, Rev. Oswaldo Lacerda. Karen is a graduate of the Mackenzie High School, Class of 2001, the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil where she studied Languages in 2001 and earned her Business Administration from UNIP in 2004.
Karen traveled to the United States, where she met the love of her life, Joshua Van Meter. They were married July 2, 2009. Karen and Josh began their lives together in Decatur, Illinois, then, later moved to Chicago. On November 4, 2015, Sofia Lynn was born! The last dream realized of a person who bravely fought for life, fought for us and those who love her.
Our princess, warrior, sweet, kind, affectionate, brilliant, without adjectives to describe a woman who has always been our safe haven, Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
