Julius S. Roberts, age 88, of Donna, Texas, previously of rural Morrison, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the Texas State Veteran’s Home in McAllen, Texas. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 28th at the funeral home. Burial of ashes will take place in Center Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll with full Military Rites.
Julius was born March 24, 1930, rural Savanna, Illinois on the family farm at the end of Roberts Road. He was one of 16 children of Harman Augustus and Eliza Elizabeth (Brunner) Roberts. Julius attended the Jacobstown Country School completing eight years. After some farm work, Julius was drafted into the US Army and served in the Korean War, working as a mechanic in the 630th Ord Ammo Co,Tank Division. After returning to the States, on February 15, 1956, Julius married Donna McCue. They raised four children on Penrose Road near Morrison and celebrated sixty-two years of marriage. They moved to Donna, Texas in 2015 to escape the winters.
Julius worked as a Boilermaker for many years, working for JT Cullen Co. in Fulton, Illinois and ADM in Clinton, Iowa, until his retirement in 1995. He was a past member of the Boilermakers Union and a fifty-year member of the Fulton American Legion. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting morel mushrooms, gardening, camping and caring for his apple trees. He enjoyed teaching his children and grandchildren about the outdoors.
Julius will be dearly missed by his wife, Donna Roberts of Donna, Texas; four children, Russell (Raeann) Roberts of Morrison, Kenneth (Teresa) Roberts of Morrison, Deborah (Jeff) Jenkins of Fulton and Barbara Larson of Morrison; eleven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Roberts of Dixon, Illinois. Julius is preceded in death by both parents, nine brothers and six sisters. Julius’ family wishes to give a special thanks to the Texas State Veterans Home for their loving care and special tribute to Julius.
