Joyce Weis was strong-willed, smart, and held to her convictions. She lived a simple life consisting of her flowers, friends and family. Joyce Jean Rohweder Weis, age 84, died Monday, December 9, 2013 at Mercy Living Center South, Clinton Iowa.
Joyce was born August 24, 1929 to Alfred and Amanda Engel Rohweder, on a farm south of Miles. She was baptized on April 12, 1930 in the Lutheran Parsonage in Preston, and was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston in 1946. Joyce attended the Miles Consolidated School, and graduated in 1947. Following her graduation, she began a career as a Retail Store Clerk at the J.C. Penny store in Clinton for several years. She later worked as a Clerk at the Coast to Coast hardware store in Maquoketa, Iowa for six years.
Joyce married Joseph Weis at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clinton on July 19, 1968. The marriage ended in a divorce after 4 ½ years. She was then employed at the AC Nielson Coupon Clearing House for nine years until the coupon sorting division was transferred from Clinton to Mexico. She was then employed by the City of Miles as a part-time employee in the City Clerk’s office, until her retirement in October 1998.
Joyce loved the outdoors, and enjoyed planting and taking care of all kinds of flowers. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans to give to friends and interested relatives.
Joyce will be dearly missed by two nephews, Darwin (Sherrill) Risinger of Burkburnett, Texas, and Darin (Susan) Risinger of Maquoketa; three great-nephews, Jeremiah David Risinger of Burkburnett and Jacob and Ryan Risinger of Maquoketa, and several cousins. Joyce was preceded in death by her grandparents; her father, Alfred on June 30, 1966; her only sister, Novella Risinger on March 11, 1978; her mother, Amanda Rohweder on June 20, 1999, and all of her aunts and uncles.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 13, 2013 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Preston, Iowa. A visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at the Church. Burial will take place in Miles Cemetery, Miles, Iowa.
