Joyce M. Hovorka, age 84 of Mt. Carroll, Illinois died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at FHN Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll, with Reverend Phil Gronbach officiating. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson, Illinois. Visitation will be held 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 2, 2009 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Joyce's memory for the Mt. Carroll Ambulance Association and FHN Hospice.
Joyce was born January 20, 1925 in Savanna, Illinois, the daughter of Thurman and Kathleen (Buckwalter) Mowry. Joyce married James Hook in 1944. James died on August 2, 1968. Joyce later married John J. Hovorka on September 30, 1977 in Mt. Carroll.
Joyce farmed with her first husband and was a homemaker all of her life. Joyce also worked for Coast-to-Coast in Mt. Carroll for 14 years. She was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll since 1952. Joyce enjoyed knitting, crocheting, raising flowers, and working outdoors. She mostly loved the time that she spent with her family.
Joyce is survived by her husband, John of Mt. Carroll; a daughter, Joan and Wayne Brooks of Mt. Carroll; two stepdaughters, Christine and Charles Mason, and Gwendolynn and Daryld Gahm, all of Mt. Carroll; six grandchildren, Wesley Brooks, Tel and Tyrel Fehlhafer, Shanna Bess, Ashlynn, and Theron Mason; two great grandchildren, Jackson and Raegan; a sister, Virginia Weber of Mt. Carroll; and a brother, Forrest E. Mowry of Mt. Carroll.
Joyce is preceded in death by her first husband, James, her parents and two stepfathers.
