Joyce E. Gouker, age 91, of Lanark, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Allure Nursing Home in Mt. Carroll. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 28, at the Lanark Church of the Brethren. Visitation will take place at the church from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, immediately prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joyce’s memory to the Lanark Church of the Brethren.
Joyce was born on November 13, 1934, the daughter of Earl and Nona (Miller) Bear. Her early years were spent on the family farm outside of Lanark, a place that likely sowed the seeds for her lifelong love of the land. At age 11, the family moved into town, where Joyce attended Lanark schools and graduated with the Class of 1952.
It was in high school that Joyce met the love of her life and her high school sweetheart, Keith Gouker. They were united in marriage on December 31, 1953. Together, they shared a beautiful life, raising two daughters and celebrating 72 years of marriage, a testament to a rare and enduring devotion.
A lifelong learner and educator, Joyce attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College, graduating in 1957. She shared her talents in the classroom for several years, first teaching Home Economics in Shannon and later teaching 5th grade in Chadwick, before choosing to focus on her growing family.
Joyce was a "Master Gardener" in the truest sense. She possessed a remarkable green thumb, growing everything the Illinois climate would permit. Her small orchard provided a bounty of apples, pears, and plums, and her cellar was famously stocked year-round with canned goods from her harvest. Her family never lacked for fresh produce or a warm, home-cooked meal.
Beyond the garden, Joyce was a gifted seamstress and knitter. She delighted in creating elaborate Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, including a legendary bumble bee outfit and a "Dorothy" dress so well-crafted it was passed down through multiple granddaughters. She was equally renowned for her holiday feasts and a pie crust that was the talk of the Lanark community.
Joyce and Keith were inseparable. They spent many summer days together on the golf course, where both were known as fantastic golfers. In later years, Joyce would often ride along in the delivery truck while Keith worked for Forster's, simply enjoying the opportunity to be by his side.
A lifelong member of the Lanark Church of the Brethren, Joyce served her faith community in nearly every capacity imaginable: church secretary, board member, Women’s Fellowship, choir member, and church pianist. Her service extended to the wider community as a long-time Carroll County Election Judge and a volunteer for Golden Meals for over 20 years.
Joyce was known for her unwavering kindness and patient spirit. She never grew upset and spent her final days exactly as she lived her life, looking for ways to help others. Her greatest joy remained her home and the family she cherished so deeply.
Joyce will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Keith Gouker of Lanark; her daughter, Carla (Gordon) Schils of LaGrange, IL; four grandchildren, Sara (Gabriel) Wallace M.D. of Western Springs, IL, Michael Shippee of Chicago, IL, Abby Goldstein of Chicago, and Andie Goldstein of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, George and Julian Wallace; and her son-in-law, Adam Goldstein of Chicago.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Nona Bear, and her beloved daughter, Lou Ann Goldstein.
