Josephine I. Messmer, age 96, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society, Mt. Carroll. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 28, 2017 at Law-Jones Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established in Josephine’s memory.
Josephine was born August 8, 1920, the daughter of Joseph and Myrtle (Johns) Corbett in Savanna, Illinois. She attended Clifton Country School and Savanna High School, graduating with the Class of 1940. On October 4, 1941, Josephine married Carl Messmer in Savanna. They celebrated 19 years of marriage until Carl passed away on May 27, 1961.
Josephine spent 40 years farming in Woodland Township. She also worked as a Nurse’s Aide at the Savanna City Hospital for 30 years, part-time at the Caroline Mark Home for 29 years, and two years at the Hanover Woolen Mill. She was a member of Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church, where she helped in Esther Circle and served on many committees. She was also a member of the Home & Community Education, the Relay for Life. She was a Senior Regent Member of the Women of the Moose. Josephine enjoyed traveling, farming, and loved nature, especially trees, birds, owls and flowers. Her greatest joy was the love for her children, family and friends.
Josephine will be dearly missed by two sons, Larry (Jeannie) Messmer of Savanna, Dennis (Wendy) Messmer of Eaton, Colorado; five daughters, Norma (Clarence) Forth of Mt. Carroll, Kathleen (Wayne) Nelson of Montgomery, Texas, Karen (James) McCarty of Savanna, Carol (Jerry) Randecker of New Braunfels, Texas and Debra (Rodney) Grunloh of Bradford, Illinois; 15 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great step-grandchildren; two great-great step-grandchildren; two brothers in-law, LeRoy (Betty) Messmer of Elizabeth, Illinois and Edwin (Carol) Messmer of Umpqua, Oregon. Josephine is preceded in death by her husband, Carl; her parents, Joseph and Myrtle; three brothers, Marvin, Voris and James Corbett; two sisters, LaYonne Wells and LaVerne Deappe.
