Joseph “Buzz” Edward Sprengelmeyer II, 75, died on October 17th, 2024 in Galena, Illinois, surrounded by his adoring (and adorable)* 3 children.
Buzz was born on November 19th, 1948 in Galesburg, Illinois, to Joseph Edward Sprengelmeyer and Mary Kay Sprengelmeyer (Cirimotich).
Buzz attended the prestigious University of Dubuque for 1 week.
He was the proprietor of Buzz’s La Belle Epoque – Galena’s longest running and least profitable antique
store. Buzz has been a fixture on Main Street since 1980, when he opened up his first booth in Glick’s
Antiques. Not long after he opened his first store, which has been running ever since.
When Buzz wasn’t taunting unsuspecting tourists with a megaphone, or chasing his doberman “Poopins” down the street with a dead rabbit in his mouth (Poopins…not Buzz), he could be found lending an ear to a friend or stranger, helping someone move a piano, or bailing a friend out of jail.
Buzz could bring light into any situation with his sharp wit and dashing charm. His rusty cars and unique laugh could be heard from miles away. His clothes were paint stained, and his jacket “possibly” picked from a dumpster, but he always had impeccable style and presence.
Buzz wasn’t impressed with status, money, or fame. He treated everyone he met the same – with a
genuine smile, and a surprising remark. He will be remembered above all for his kindness and generosity.
Buzz was a devout meditator and student of Buddhism.
He is survived by his children, Laurel, Neal, and Lily, who all feel like they won the lottery by having Buzz as their Dad; brother Dave Sprengelmeyer and sisters Marcia Scheetz and Melissa (John) Bulkley, son in law Richard Parry, and beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life and Death will be held on November 30th at Turner Hall in Galena, Illinois from
2:30 - 6:30. Memorial Service will begin at 3pm. After the service attendees will be invited to share personal stories and recollections. All are welcome.
*Lily objected to including “and adorable” in this line, but she lost 2-1.
