Joseph L. Rath, age 93, of Lanark, Illinois, died Monday, August 10, 2015 at Good Samaritan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mt. Carroll, Illinois. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2015 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll. Burial will be in the Lanark Cemetery. Visitation will be held 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 16, 2015 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Mt. Carroll. A memorial fund has been established in Joseph’s memory.
Joseph was born November 12, 1921 in Washington Township on the family farm. He attended the Mosquito Hill Country School and is a graduate of the Savanna High School with the Class of 1939. On February 11, 1945, Joseph married Viola Knoess. They celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.
Joseph farmed with his wife, Viola, for twelve years near Chadwick and then near Lanark for fifty years. Joe was concerned for care of the land and was named Carroll County Conservation Farmer of the Year in 1994.He loved spending time with his grandchildren and would spoil them. For many years he personalized their pumpkins by etching their names on the pumpkin when it was small.
Joseph was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Carroll; the Carroll County Farm Bureau, where he served as secretary for twenty years; the Lanark Lions Club, receiving the Melvin Jones Fellow designation for humanitarian service; and also served on the Lanark School Board.
Joseph will be dearly missed by two sons, Henry (Gail) Rath of Lake Zurich, IL. and Reverend James (Janet) Rath of Lake Mills, WI., eight grandchildren, Christopher Rath of Lake in the Hills, IL., Jennifer (Kerry) Rea of Grayslake, IL., Jeremiah Rath of Wheeling, IL., Amy Rath of Sun Prairie, WI., Dan Rath of Ottawa, IL., Tim Rath of Eau Claire, WI., Julie Rath of Marshfield, WI., and Katie Rath of Puyallup, WA.; two great grandchildren, Eddie and Leah Rea of Grayslake, IL; a brother, Paul Rath of Savanna; and a sister, Eunice Rath of Savanna. Joseph was preceded in death by his wife, Viola; two brothers, Henry and Fred; a sister, Lois Koster; and both parents.
