Joseph J. Porras, age 77, of Hanover, Illinois, died Friday, July 13, 2007 at his home. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 18, 2007 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Hanover, Illinois. Father James Canova will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Hanover, Illinois. Military Rites will be accorded by the Hanover V.F.W. Post #5300. A visitation will be held on Tuesday July 17, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Hanover where friends may call between 5:00 and 8:00 pm.
Joe was born on June 30, 1930 in East Chicago, Indiana, the son of Ezequiel and Apolinar (Valdivia) Porras. Joe grew up and attended school in East Chicago and later joined the U.S. Army. While stationed in Germany, Joe met and married Johanna Meeck on June 2, 1955 in Munich, Germany. After retiring from the Army in 1975, Joe worked at the Savanna Army Depot until 1993 when Johanna passed away.
Joe was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs, Bears and the Bulls, and loved attending any event with his grandchildren. He was also very active with the Hanover V.F.W. Honor guard.
Joe will be dearly missed by his daughter Barbara Porras of Hanover, Illinois; his grandchildren: Sara (Jared Brockmeyer) Magalli of Minonk, Illinois and Alexander Magalli of Evanston, Illinois; a brother Trino (Lupe) Porras of East Chicago, Indiana; his sister Ramona (Joe) Sandoval of East Chicago, Indiana and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Johanna, and two brothers Izzy and Chon.
