Jon J. Jungjohann, age 64, of Alexandria, VA (formerly of Savanna, Illinois), died Tuesday, August 14, 2007, after a brief illness. Cremation has been accorded and a Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna, Illinois with Reverend Lawrence Thomson officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Lost Mound Cemetery, Hanover, Illinois. The family requests that donations in his memory be sent to the Africa University, P. O. Box 1320, Old Mutare, Zimbabwe, or to the Congress Heights United Methodist Church, 421 S. Alabama Ave. SE, Washington, D.C. 20032. Jon was born May 24, 1943 in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Leroy and Joyce (Hushaw) Jungjohann. He graduated from Savanna High School class of 1961. He attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Illinois, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science. After graduating from college, Jon served in the Peace Corps, teaching school for two years in a rural area outside Monrovia, Liberia. Returning to the United States in 1968 he studied at Syracuse University, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Public Administration. In 1969 Jon married Kathy Mullan. The Jungjohann’s had one child, Karen. For more than twenty-five years, he worked in various administrative capacities with the Employment and Training Division of the U.S. Department of Labor (ETA) retiring in 1995. Following his retirement from government service, Mr. Jungjohann worked for the American Psychological Association, but left that position to serve with the United Nations and the European Union in preparing East European countries for their first democratic elections, first in Bosnia (1998), then Liberia, and in both East and West Kosovo. Upon his return to the United States after his Kosovo posting, Mr. Jungjohann returned to the Department of Labor as a contractor, and at the time of his death was active in church affairs at Foundry United Methodist Church, with a special interest in African assistance programs, notably in connection with the African University in Zimbabwe. Jon had been named a past Outstanding Alumni of the Year by the Savanna School Board.Jon is survived by his mother, Joyce Jungjohann; his daughter Karen Jungjohann, her husband Glenn Wiebe; grandchildren Charlotte and Aidan of Toronto, Canada; and his sister Judy (Robert) Mandernack of Tampa, Florida. Jon is preceded in death by his father.
