John J. Smolek, age 89, of Savanna, Illinois, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 16, 2006, at St. John The Baptist Church, Savanna, Illinois. The Celebrant will be Father Moises Apostol. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, Savanna, Illinois. Friends may call from 6:00- 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 15, 2006 at Law-Jones Funeral , Savanna, Illinois.
John was born July 6, 1917, the son of John Karl and Marie J. (Gajdostik) Smolek in Savanna. He attended Savanna High School, graduating, Class of 1937. John attended two years at the Federal Engineering School in Chicago, Illinois. On November 29, 1941, John married Beulah Arlene Gaar in Savanna. John entered the United States Army Air Force, on December 1, 1943, serving in the #611 Tank Destroyer Battalion. He worked at the Savanna Army Depot for forty years until retirement in 1981.
John enjoyed music very much; he played violin, drums and the accordion with the Smokey Valley Boys Band, the Glen Law Orchestra and the Eddie Uhl Ranchhands Band. John was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna; the Knights of Columbus; the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Savanna American Legion.
John is survived by his wife, Beulah of Savanna; a daughter, Joyce (Ed) Martin of Freeport, Illinois; and four grandchildren, Thad Martin, Kelly (Charles) Feaver, Shannon Martin and Christopher Smolek.
John is preceded in death by his parents; a son, James and a sister, Lillian McGhee.
