John P. Sloan, age 88, of Thomson, Illinois, died Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at Harbor Crest Nursing Home in Fulton, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 18, 2006 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Thomson, Illinois. Reverend Paul Judd of the Thomson United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery in Thomson. Visitation will be held from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 18, 2006 at the funeral home prior to the service. A memorial fund has been established in John's memory.
John was born on March 6, 1918 in Stockland, Illinois, the son of Jesse P. and Mamie L. (Newman) Sloan. He attended school in Milford, Illinois and graduated from Milford High School in 1936, he later attended the Illinois Commercial College in Champaign, Illinois. He married Myra E. Kindle on November 20, 1943 in Sterling, Illinois.
John served in the United States Army and was stationed in England during World War II. John and his wife attended the Thomson United Methodist Church in Thomson. He worked at the Savanna Army Depot in the accounting department as a Cost Analyst for 33 years, retiring in 1973. John was a past board member of the Thomson School Board, where he served as Treasurer and President. John enjoyed gardening and yard work. After his retirement, John and his wife enjoyed wintering in Florida and playing golf.
John will be dearly missed by his wife, Myra Sloan of Thomson; one son, Richard (Julie) Sloan of Eugene, Oregon and one daughter, Jill (Ed) Nett of Davenport, Iowa; four grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
