John Eldon Powell, age 83, of Savanna, Illinois, died Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital, Davenport, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 24, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church, Savanna with a Flag Presentation to follow the service. Burial will take place in Clinton Lawn Cemetery, Clinton, Iowa. A visitation will be held from 10-11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church.
John was born July 19, 1935, the son of Maitlin and Violet (Hartson) Powell in Clinton, Iowa. He graduated from Clinton High School. John proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1953-1961. On May 10, 2008, John married Florence Bevins in Savanna.
John worked as a carpenter for most of his life. He also worked in maintenance for Mercy Hospital in Clinton and Big Meadows Nursing Home in Savanna for 10 years. He also helped install the old-fashioned light poles on Main Street in Savanna. John was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Savanna. He loved spending time outdoors fishing. He had a big heart and enjoyed helping others.
John will be dearly missed by his wife, Florence; two sons, Brian (Bonnie) Powell and Blake Powell of Clinton; two stepsons, Edgar (Niki) Bevins of Minook, Illinois and Richard Bevins of Florida; one granddaughter, Amanda (Matt) Huizenga and a great-grandson, Colton.
John is preceded in death by three brothers; one sister; and two sons, Brent in 1998, and one at birth.
