John F. Mest, age 90, of Savanna, Illinois, died Thursday, July 28, 2005 at the Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna, Illinois. A Graveside Service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday,July 30, 2005 at the Savanna Township Cemetery with Full Military Rites. Memorials may be made to the Savanna Library Fund in John’s name. Pastor Thomas Moe of First United Methodist Church in Savanna will officiate. Friends may call from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2005 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna.
John was born September 7, 1914 the son of George and Eda (Belt) Mest in Savanna.
John graduated from Savanna High School Class of 1932. He served in the United States Army during World War II spending four years in the European Theater under the U.S. Ordinance Division, serving in England and France. John worked at the Savanna Ordinance Depot for thirty years. He was a member of the Savanna American Legion Post #148. He served on the Savanna Hospital Board; Savanna Library Board; Carroll County Election Board and was always involved in Civic work locally.
John is survived by one niece, Fran (Robert) Heusinkveld of Plano, Texas; great nephew, John (Karen) Heusinkveld of Carrollton, Texas; great niece, LuAnn (Mark) Blough; g-great nephews, Collin and Jordan Heusinkveld; g-great niece, Kathryn Heusinkveld; g-great nephews, Matthew, Daniel and David Blough all of Carrollton, Texas.
John was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mabelle Mest Greison
