John D. McNamara, Ret Sgt CPD, age 65 of Savanna, Illinois, previously of Chicago, died suddenly Wednesday, July 24, 2013 due to a motor vehicle accident. Visitation will be held 1:00 - 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 2013 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna, and also 3:00 - 9:00 p.m. Monday, July 29, 2013 at Malec & Sons Funeral Home, 6000 N. Milwaukee, Chicago. A private family funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Malec & Sons Funeral Home, Chicago.
John was born June 18, 1948 in Chicago, the son of James L. and Marita (Manning) McNamara. He attended St. Peter Canisius Elementary School, and graduated from St. Pat’s High School with the Class of 1967. In 1971, John received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minnesota. He was a highly decorated, fourth-generation police officer for the City of Chicago from 1977 until his retirement as a Sergeant in 2008. He married Barbara Endre (retired C.P.D) on February 14, 1991 in Chicago. After retiring, John and Barbara relocated permanently to Savanna, Illinois.
John was a member of the Chicago Police Department Sergeants’ Association and the Storybrook Golf Course in Hanover, Illinois. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and cutting grass. He loved having a breakfast club at McDonald’s, playing 500 Rummy, and attending plays at the Timber Lake Playhouse in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. John did what he could to help other people, and above all, loved spending time with his friends and family.
John is survived by his wife Barbara; three children, John (C.F.D) and Mary McNamara, Laura and Brian (C.P.D) Okrasinski, and Daniel (C.P.D.) and Susan McNamara, of Chicago; two stepsons, Victor Scimeca of Antioch, Illinois, and Vincent Scimeca of Chicago; eight grandchildren, Cate, John Jr., Patrick, Michael, Brian, Bret, Mary Grace, and Emily; his mother, Marita McNamara of Niles, Illinois; four siblings, Jim (Jola) McNamara of Chicago, Patricia (Ron) Ableman of Plano, Texas, Jeff McNamara of Chicago, and Joe (Patty) McNamara of Des Plaines, Illinois; and moth in-law, Carol Endre of Mt. Carroll.
John is preceded in death by his father, James McNamara (retired C.P.D.).
