John E. McColley, age 77, of Sabula, Iowa, formerly of Savanna, Illinois passed away Wednesday January 16, 2013. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday January 19, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna with Reverend Sejoon Jang officiating. Burial will take place at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, rural Savanna. A memorial fund has been established in John’s memory.
John was born on September 16, 1935, the son of Ronald and Mona (Schumacher) McColley in Hanover, Illinois. While attending high school, John was drafted into the United States Army and proudly served his country for two years. John married Marna Faye Tropp on August 12, 1954 in the First United Methodist Church in Savanna.
After he was honorably discharged, John worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for twenty-five years. John later purchased a farm north of Savanna, Illinois and continued to farm, until he retired and moved to Sabula, Iowa. He enjoyed farming and was a member of the Carroll County Farm Bureau. John also enjoyed going to flea markets and collecting rocks and fossils. Most of all, John loved spending time with his family and friends.
John will be missed by his; five sons, David A. (Holly) McColley of Mount Carroll, William L. McColley of Sabula, Iowa, Edward E. (Kimberly) McColley of Savanna, Mark A. (Jennifer) McColley of Portage, Indiana and Matthew J. (Mary) McColley of Sabula; two daughters, Mona M. (Gary) Herberger of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Jill L. (Hank) Thomson of Lena, Illinois; eleven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Ruth) McColley of Sabula, Iowa and six sisters, Beverly Tack of Savanna, Patty (Bob) Bennell of Lanark, Angeline Primak of Savanna, Jane (Bob) Rasmussen of Cedarville, Illinois, Joan (Larry) Bielema of Thomson and Peggy (Keith) Chapman of Savanna.
John was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jim, Bill and Bob McColley.
