John H. Letcher, age 82, of Thomson, Illinois, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. Cremation Rites have been accorded. . A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 11, 2019 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, Savanna.
John was born October 5, 1936, in Morrison, Illinois, the son of Benjamin and Jeannette (Smith) Letcher. John proudly served his country for three years in the United States Marine Corp. John married Frances Kay Zubaty on August 20, 1960 in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Savanna.
John worked as a Tool and Die Maker at the Savanna Army Depot before retiring after twenty years. After retirement, John drove school bus for the West Carroll School District for several years. He was an active member of the Savanna Rotary Club. John was also a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he was active with the Knights of Columbus. John was also a past volunteer fireman for Savanna, before moving to Thomson in 1989. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially golfing and shooting trap at Mississippi Flyway in Thomson. John also enjoyed traveling and taking bus trips with his wife, Kay. John and Kay enjoyed going out for lunch, especially to Dusty’s Pizza in Thomson. Most of all, John cherished spending time with his close friends and family.
John will be dearly missed by his wife of fifty-eight years, Kay; a daughter, Jodie (Bob) Schoon of East Troy, Wisconsin; a son, Scott Letcher of Savanna, Illinois; four grandchildren, Bethany, Brian, Kayla and Jennifer Schoon; two sisters in-law, Diane (Fred) Mayhall in Thomson and Marcia Snyder in Fulton; and close friends Ken (Vicki) White of Clinton.
John is preceded in death by his parents Benjamin and Jeannette, three brothers, Donald “Dutch” Letcher, David Letcher, and James Letcher; one sister, Dorothy Vanover; and one brother in-law, Kelvin Snyder.
