John A. Leemon, age 79, of Mt. Carroll, Illinois, died Wednesday, February 28, 2007 at Southwest Medical Center in Fort Myers, Florida. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2007 at Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church, with Reverend Mark Harkness officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. A Memorial fund has been established in John’s honor.
John was born on January 12, 1928 the son of Allen and Eva (Merrit) Leemon in Hoopeston, Illinois. He was a graduate of Hoopeston High School, Class of 1946, going on to pursue a military career at West Point where he became ill and discovered he only had one kidney, he went on to attend the University of Illinois after receiving his Bachelors Degree, he then attended the University of Illinois Law School, and received his Law Degree in 1952. On July 14, 1951, John married Sally P. Pierce in Moline, Illinois.
Attorney Ralph Eaton encouraged John, to open a Law Office in Savanna, after two years he joined Eaton in his practice in Mt. Carroll, where he has practiced for fifty-five years. John had worked with many attorneys throughout his career, including Judge Jack Rapp and his current partner Jerry Kane. John enjoyed his law practice immensely, especially trial law.
John was a member of the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church where he was a trustee and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Mt. Carroll Mutual Insurance Company, and Shannon State Bank, Shannon, Illinois.
A reflection of John’s life is as follows, “Seeing Mallards landing with wings locked in place, flying a Cessna 182 in the sky’s open space. Playing a game of pitch with family and the best of friends, reeling in a walleye and feeling the pole bend. Swinging a golf club time and time again, and again, practicing law and contributing to the very end. Taking pride in my family—they’ve given me much cheer, loving a devoted wife for fifty-six years”.
John will be dearly missed by his loving wife, Sally of Mt. Carroll; a son, John of Chicago, Illinois; a daughter, Lisa (Bruce) Johnson of Stoughton, Wisconsin and two grandchildren, Andrea and Erik Johnson. John is preceded in death by his parents.
