John R. Johnson, age 54, of the Riverview area, rural Savanna, Illinois, died Wednesday, January 27, 2010. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 1, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Savanna, with Rev. Larry Thomson officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Lake Cemetery, Savanna. Visitation will be held from 2 – 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 31, at the Law – Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. A memorial has been established in John’s name.
John Raymond Johnson was born on January 27, 1956, in Savanna, Illinois, the son of Lloyd “Red” and Geraldine “Gerry” (Putman) Johnson. He graduated from Mt. Carroll High School with the Class of 1974, and shortly thereafter hired out on the Milwaukee Road as a Switchman/Brakeman. He then became Yardmaster prior to entering into the locomotive engine service for the Soo Line in 1985. He retired in 1988.
Since 1979, John was a proud and active member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge # 1095, Savanna, where he served as Governor. In 1991 John joined Legion #57. On July 5, 1999 he was confirmed the Fellowship Degree of the loyal Order of the Moose. He received the pilgrim Degree of Merit on May 26, 2007.
John found great enjoyment in preparing and serving Thanksgiving Day meals to the community at the Moose Lodge, rooting for the Chicago Cubs on WGN Radio and watching the Chicago Bears games on television, spending time checking in and chatting with friends, family and community members, and working outdoors with his wife, Ann.
John is survived by his wife, Ann of Thomson, Illinois; a daughter, Emily (Phillip) Behnke of Loves Park, Illinois, a son Christoffer (Haley) Lammer-Heindel of Dubuque, Iowa; granddaughter, Iris Lammer-Heindel; four sisters, Linda (Stephen) Sippel of Thomson, Illinois Mary (Richard) Smith of Shannon, Illinois, Connie (Claude "Butch") Lease of Savanna and Roxanne (David) Kness of Chadwick, Illinois; many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews, as well as many good friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; Lloyd “Red” and Geraldine “Gerry” Johnson; an infant sister and a nephew.
