John W. Ivey, Jr., age 84 of Mount Carroll, Illinois, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010, at FHN Memorial Hospital, Freeport, Illinois. Cremation Rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 20, 2010 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mount Carroll with Reverend Elizabeth Mascal officiating. A memorial gathering will be held from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in John’s memory.
John was born on December 23, 1925, the son of John W. and Jessie C. (Arb) Ivey, Sr. in Savanna, Illinois. He attended school in Mount Carroll and later served his Country in the United States Army during World War II, where he received a Bronze Star. After he was discharged from the Army, John went to work for George W. Ivey and Sons Monuments, Mount Carroll. John later owned and operated Ivey Monuments until it was sold in 1988. He continued to work for the monument company until retiring in 1995. John married Marsha Zink on February 12, 2002 in Mount Carroll. He was member of the Mount Carroll American Legion for over sixty years. John enjoyed attending Stock Car races and had a real passion for cars. He also enjoyed going to minor league baseball games in Clinton, Iowa and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
John will be dearly missed by his wife Marsha of Mount Carroll; a step-son, Larry Traum, Jr. of Mount Carroll; two step-daughters, Rebecca (Marc) Morhardt of Mount Carroll and Elizabeth Hockman of Mount Carroll; three step-grandchildren, Tiffany Morhardt, Kara Hockman and Eric Hockman; and one nephew, John F. Thorne, Jr. of Glen Ellyn, Illinois.
John was preceded in death by his parents; and one half sister, Marie Thorne.
