John J. Flynn, age 58, of Hanover, Illinois was always willing to help others and never asked for anything in return. John passed into Heaven on Wednesday, December 18, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family. Friends and family are invited to share in John’s life at

John was born on March 6, 1955, the son of Julius and Irene (Dittmar) Flynn in Dubuque, Iowa. He attended Hanover High School and graduated with the Class of 1973. He enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for three years. He married Carla Vandervate on October 20, 1979 in the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover.
John worked in the Rear Farm Tire Division at Titan Tire in Freeport, Illinois for thirty-four years, before recently retiring in August of 2013. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially farming with his family and spending time taking care of his multiple flower gardens. John also enjoyed woodworking and built multiple shelves to hold his collection of mugs. Most of all, John loved spending time with his family, especially his grandsons, Dominic and Dolan.
John will be dearly missed by his wife, Carla; two daughters, Crystal (Tony) Geerts of Hanover and Courtenay Flynn of Hanover; two grandsons, Dominic and Dolan Geerts; two brothers, Gary (Mary) Flynn and Charlie (Jeananne) Flynn, both of Galena, Illinois; one sister, Donna (Gary) Mullane of Hanover and his mother-in-law, Susan Vandervate. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, Julius and Irene Flynn and his father-in-law, Clifford Vandervate, aunts, uncles and cousins.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover, with Reverend David Vidler officiating. Burial will take place in Greenwood Cemetery, Galena. A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, December 22, 2013 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover. A memorial fund has been established in John’s memory.
