John L. Bumphrey, age 79 of Henderson, Nevada, formerly of Mt. Carroll, Illinois and Milledgeville, Illinois, passed away Friday, August 9, 2013 at Clearview Health and Rehabilitation in Henderson, Nevada. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 19, 2013 at the Community Baptist Church in Milledgeville. Burial will take place in Oak Knoll Cemetery in rural Sterling, Illinois. A visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m., Sunday, August 18, 2013 at the Frank-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mt. Carroll. Memorials may be given to the Lutheran Social Service of Sauk Valley and to the Community Baptist Church in Milledgeville, in John’s memory.
John was born July 22, 1934, the son of William and Dorothy (Taylor) in Neponset, Illinois. He attended Annawan High School in Annawan, Illinois with the Class of 1952. John worked as a Dairy Farmer and as a Union Carpenter for many years. John married Joyce Ruth Weaver on July 4, 1954 in Tampico, Illinois at the Methodist Church. Joyce passed away October 25, 2002 in Polo, Illinois.
John was a member of the Illinois Carpenter's Union and the Community Baptist Church in Milledgeville. He enjoyed farming, playing cards, traveling the United States. Most of all, John enjoyed time spent with his friends and family.
John will be dearly missed by four sons, Ronald (Vicky) Bumphrey of Savanna, Illinois, Donald Bumphrey of Henderson, John (Elaine) Bumphrey II of Pearl City, Illinois, William (Ronda) Bumphrey of Mt. Carroll; two daughters, Connie (Ken Gilland) Bumphrey of Mt. Carroll, Penny (Charlie Perce) Kramer of Henderson; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-nine great grandchildren; two brothers, William Bumphrey of Rockford, Illinois, Jerry (Christel) Bumphrey of Las Vegas, Nevada; four sisters, Doris (Wayne) of Tampico, Alice (Bert) Comstubble of Rock Falls, Illinois, Mary Jane (Norden) Scanlan of Tampico, Kathryn Scanlan Haller of Franklin Grove, Illinois.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; one infant daughter, Diane Bumphrey; a sister, Marjorie Landseidel; and his parents.
