Joann Irene Messmer, age 83, of Thomson, died Friday, April 19, 2013 at the Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Visitation will be held 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Burial will be in Lower York Cemetery, Thomson. Joann was born December 3, 1929 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of Eugene and Mary (Livermore) Rockwell. She is a graduate of the Clinton High School with the Class of 1949. On September 13, 1952, Joann married Floyd G. Messmer at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Iowa. Floyd died December 12, 2006.
Joann worked at the Clinton County Courthouse after high school. She later was a homemaker. Joann was a member of the Women’s Circle at the United Methodist Church in Downers Grove. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, beadwork, and handiwork.
Joann will be dearly missed by three sons, Steve Messmer of Fairfield, Connecticut, John Messmer of Savanna, and Paul (Perri)Messmer of Westmont, Illinois; two daughters, Lee Ann (Frank) Swan of Fulton, Illinois and Cheryl Harridge of Morrison, Illinois; 7 grandchildren, two great grandchild, and one brother, Jack (Marilyn) Rockwell of Texas.
Joann is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Floyd, one brother, Gene, one infant son, and both her parents.
