Joann was born on January 9, 1942, the daughter of Vincent and Rosella (Tebbe) Sullivan in Bellevue, Iowa. Joann was raised in Springbrook, Iowa and attended Springbrook Catholic School. She married John “Jack” Messerich on November 17, 1962 in Springbrook, Iowa.
Joann will always be remembered for her homemade bread and pies. She also enjoyed staying home and taking care of her family. In her younger years, she operated an in-home daycare until leaving to work outside the home in the late 1960’s. She worked at Ensign-Coil in Bellevue, Iowa, for 40 years, before retiring in 2007. She was a long time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Preston, and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed baking for farmer’s markets, making crafts for craft fairs, playing bingo, and playing cards. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially attending the grandkid’s sporting events, playing Chinese Rummy, "Black Friday" shopping, and weekend getaways with her daughters.
Joann will be dearly missed by her husband, Jack, of Preston; seven children, Stan (Gloria) Messerich of Spragueville, Louann (Terry) Sieverding of Bellevue, Terry (Lori) Messerich of Charlotte, Annette (Dave) Taylor of Swisher, Randy (Julie) Messerich of Spragueville, Tracey (Joseph) Lee of Preston, and Dawn (Michael) Chambers of Charlotte; thirty grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and two sisters, LaVonne (Dale) Lehmkuhl of Camanche, and Karen (Bob) Skoff of Charlotte. Joann was preceded in death by her parents, one grandchild, Lindsey Sieverding, one great-grandchild, Coen Ritchie; and four brothers, Lester, Bernie, Harlan, and Dale Sullivan.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Mercy Medical Center of Dubuque and a special thank you to Dr. Eric Engelman and his staff for the great care they gave Joann.
