James Truman Philpot, age 84, of Elizabeth, Illinois, passed away Saturday, February 20, 2010, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 26, 2010, at the Church of St. Mary in Elizabeth, with Father Noel Jacob as celebrant. Burial will follow in the Elizabeth Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 26, at Law – Jones Funeral Home prior to the funeral mass. Memorials may be directed to the Elizabeth Food Pantry.

Jim was born September 3, 1925, in rural Elizabeth, the son of Orville and Genevieve (Cahill) Philpot. He graduated from Elizabeth High School with the Class of 1943. He served in the Navy aboard the USS Zaurak during World War II in the Pacific Theater. When he returned home, he worked at the Savanna Army Depot as an electrician until retiring in 1980. On October 6, 1951, he married Hazel Read in Rockton, Illinois. Jim enjoyed mushroom hunting, going to Chicago Cubs games, and playing cards.

Jim is survived and lovingly remembered by his daughter, Nancy and her husband Greg Noel, and his grandchildren, Greg and Stacy, all of North Liberty, Iowa; three sisters – in – law, Mrs. Lelan (Elizabeth) Read, Mrs. Marshall (Cathryn) Read, both of Dubuque, Iowa, and Mrs. Kermit (Bernice) Read of Rockford, Illinois; and many cousins in the Stockton, Illinois, area.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.
