James A. Manning, age 85 of DeKalb, Illinois formerly of Savanna, Illinois, died Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. A home going celebration will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the New Unity Deliverance and Worship Center in Savanna. Burial will take place in the Savanna Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. July 19, 2013 at the Law – Jones Funeral Home in Savanna. A memorial fund has been established in Jame's memory.
James was born in Osceola, Arkansas on April 19, 1928, the son of Ezekiel and Obanna (Anderson) Manning. On August 27, 1950 he married Katherine Washington in Forrest City, Arkansas. Katherine passed away January 10, 1992. James worked for Jack O’donnel Chevrolet for twenty years doing body and fender work. He later went to work for himself, owning and operating Manning’s Paint Shop for twenty four years in Savanna. He also worked at Eaton Corporation in Hanover, Illinois until his retirement.
James was a trustee and church treasurer under the leadership of Reverend C.E. Threadgill at Unity Missionary Baptist Church for many years. James was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed playing cards, watching boxing and the Chicago White Sox. James’s personality was very outgoing and he never met a stranger. Most of all he cherished the time he spent with his family, he truly loved his family.
James is survived and lovingly remembered by three sons, Kenneth (Brenda) Manning of Woodridge, Illinois, LeRoy (Michelle) Young of Savanna, Fairley Manning of DeKalb; three daughters, Debra Thornton of Dekalb, Tanya Gentry of Huntsville, Alabama, Felita (Will) Mack of Chicago, Illinois; twelve grandchildren, Chrystal Caillouette-Dent, Murray A. Bowens, Detra Bowens, Khary Bowens,James D. Manning, Thea Manning, Teddi Manning, Phillip Gentry, Trenton Gentry, Andrew Gentry, Olivia Young, Sienna Young; twenty-two great grandchildren; one sister, Jaunita Webb of Chicago; two brothers, Leroy Manning of Chicago, Lloyd Manning Sr. of Deleware.
James is preceded in death by his parents; wife; fifteen brothers and sisters.
