James “Jim” Lawson, age 91, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017 in Davenport, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church. Burial will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, Mt. Carroll. A visitation will be held from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017, at the church prior to the service. A memorial fund has been established in Jim’s memory.
Jim was born on June 27, 1925, the son of Milton and Ruth Lawson in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He attended Milan High School in Milan, Michigan, and graduated with the Class of 1943. Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army from January 1, 1944 to December 25, 1945. He was stationed in England from July 1944 until August 1945, where he worked as a medical assistant at a field hospital aid station. After his military service, Jim returned to the U.S. and began attending Michigan State University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture in 1950. On September 10, 1953, Jim married Margaret Bert in Monroe, Michigan. They celebrated 58 years of marriage before Margaret passed away in October 2011.
Jim developed purebred cattle herds in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois, and won several awards in each state. He later went on to work at Pinkerton Security for several years. Jim was a life member of the Mt. Carroll American Legion and VFW Post 4857. He also attended the Mt. Carroll United Methodist Church. Jim enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening. He loved all sports, and enjoyed watching the Kentucky Derby and the Chicago Cubs. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Jim will be dearly missed by two daughters, Sally (Patrick) Eberhardt of Geneseo, Illinois, and Janet Sevey of Colorado Springs, Colorado; four grandchildren, Mallory (Kyle) Buck of Colorado Springs, James (Krystal) Sevey of Security, Colorado, Nick Eberhardt of Denver, Colorado and Rob Eberhardt of Geneseo; and five great-grandchildren, Hailey, Sylas, Ryder, Liam and Dylan. He was preceded in death by his parents.
