James “Jim” L. Johnson, age 89, of Mt. Carroll, IL, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023 at St. Joseph Village in Freeport, IL. Private family services will be held, with burial occurring at Daggert Cemetery in rural Mt. Carroll. Family and friends are invited to share in Jim’s life at lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Jim was born February 21, 1934 in Anamosa, IA, the son of Kenneth and Helen (Corwin) Johnson. Shortly after his school years, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy, serving for 4 and a half years. On January 29, 1955 Jim married Ruby Frederick, in Wacker, IL.
Following his honorary discharge from the Navy, Jim went to work for Flexonics in Savanna. Being good with tools and a talented welder, Jim operated his own welding and repair shop for a while before transitioning to the Savanna Army Depot, ultimately retiring from the depot in 1999.
Jim was a member of the Chrysler Antique Car Club and collected antique cars. Even into his retirement years he held an affinity for repair work and was always tinkering with whatever he could get his hands on. In his idle time he loved to hunt and fish, and would routinely read and keep up with the news. On a nice day you would likely find him sitting on the porch watching the birds.
Jim will be dearly missed by his wife of 68 years, Ruby; son Paul (Shelly) Johnson, of Albuquerque, NM; daughter, Carol (Mint J.) Jilderda, of Mt. Carroll; grandchildren, Mint D., Calvin and Titus Jilderda, Tyler and Ashley Johnson, and Sarah Rhodes; step-grandchildren, Lauryn Miller and Tim Bruhn; great- grandchildren, Ava Mae, Maverick, Evelyn, and Owen; step great-grandchild, Asher; sisters, Lois (Ray) Sabin, of Hampshire, IL and Kathy (Terry) Hans, of Fulton, IL; and brothers, Chares Johnson, of Savanna, Allen Johnson, of Wisconsin Dells, WI, and Kevin Johnson, of Morrison, IL.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Helen; brother, Blaine “Mike” (Lois) Johnson; sister, Clarinda “Linda” Kampas; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Ralph and Ethel Frederick.
