James Richard “Jim” Hill, age 85, of Savanna, Illinois, formerly of Hanover, Illinois, died on Saturday, October 14, 2006 at Big Meadows Nursing Facility, Savanna, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 19, 2006 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Savanna, Illinois. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Warren, Illinois. Pastor Kendrick Matthews of the United Methodist Church, Hanover, will officiate.
Jim was born on February 18, 1921, the second child and first son of Ambrose and Mary (Darnell) Hill, at their home in rural Stockton area. Jim attended schools in the Stockton area and was awarded a college scholarship for academic acheivement.
Jim served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific Theater with the 353rd. Engineer Regiment. They were responsible for the construction of several hospitals. After his military service Jim returned to the Stockton area. On October 9, 1946, Jim married Joyce E. Wright in Stockton. Joyce died on July 16, 2003 in Clinton, Iowa. Jim worked for the Savanna Army Depot for thirty-eight years, retiring in 1981.
Jim was avid sports fan all his life and enjoyed in particular the Chicago teams, the Bears Football, Cubs Baseball and Bulls Basketball. He also enjoyed coin collecting, reading, playing cards and when he was able, working with model trains.
Jim is survived by one son, Steven R. Hill of Las Vegas, Nevada; two daughters, Susan L. Hill of Savanna, Illinois, and Jodelle R. (Michael) Dascher of Hanover, Illinois, three grandchildren, Christopher (Melissa) Hill of Cuba City, Wisconsin; Weston Hill-Auwaerter of Spring, Texas; and Kelsey Dascher of Hanover; One great-grandchild, Devon Alexander Hill of Cuba City, Wisconsin; three sisters, Mary Ann Preston of Savanna; Virginia Ross of Chicago and Doris (Bud) Brandt of Fountain Valley, California; one brother, Robert Hill of Stockton and many nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife and his eldest son, James E. Hill; one sister Mary Alice Morris, and two brothers, George and Ken Hill.
