James Fred Gunter, 92 years old, of Elizabeth, Illinois, formerly of Hinesville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home. A Family service was held at 2:00 p.m. on September 21, 2013
Mr. Fred Gunter was born April 4, 1921 in Comer, Georgia, the son of Mack and Lavonia Gunter. He married Claire Elizabeth Floyd of Hinesville, Georgia, on October 30, 1945.
Fred was in active and reserve military service, retiring as Lt. Colonel. In World War II he served in North Africa, Italy, New Guinea, and the Philippines.
He received his Master’s Degree from Georgia State University where he also served as an instructor. He was the administrator of South Fulton Hospital in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
Fred attended the First Methodist Church of Hinesville, Georgia, and was a member of the Rotary Club for fifty-two years.
Surviving are one daughter, Anita (Les) Montgomery of Galena, and two grandchildren, Mindy (Tom) McKeaige of Woodridge, Illinois and Joy Montgomery (Paul Riese) of Carpentersville, Illinois.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife, Claire, and seventeen brothers and sisters. Fred’s family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to the Elizabeth Nursing Home for the kindness and care he received while residing there.
