Jim was born in Seneca, S.C., in 1945, the son of Charles and Annie Frances Doran. Jim grew up in Savanna, where he played high school basketball for the Savanna Indians. He moved to the Quad Cities after graduating to attend Black Hawk College where he met Sally J. Young. They were married on February 19, 1965.
He met many people who became lifelong friends during more than 40 years in the insurance and financial planning business. He spent most of his career at Prudential, until retiring in 2001. Not long after, he opened his own Allstate Insurance agency with a long-time friend and colleague. Over the years, he developed hundreds of clients in North Eastern Iowa and North Western Illinois who valued his expertise and integrity. Jim took all his clients’ needs as his own and really enjoyed his work and the people he met along the way.
A perfect day for Jim was being on the river with friends or family, fishing or just enjoying a ride. His grandsons, Ryan and Collin, were a very important part of his life. He loved spending time with them rough housing and being a kid himself. He was especially happy when his son, Jim Jr., was married this past May. Jim was an avid basketball fan and loved watching Hawkeye basketball. Since surviving a heart attack at age 52, he ran the Bix for the next nine years and was very proud of this accomplishment.
Jim is survived by his wife, Sally; daughter Scarlett and son-in-law Craig, grandsons Ryan and Collin of Plymouth, MN; son Jim Jr. and daughter-in-law Cheryl Mae of Moline, Illinois; and brother, Jeff Doran of Savanna. He is preceded in death by both of his parents.
Jim had a quick wit and sense of humor, was caring and generous and always wanted to do the right thing. He made a lasting impression on many people and will be sorely missed.
Special thanks to staff at Genesis Health Systems. Jim was always pleased with the care he received and especially enjoyed working with the Genesis Rehabilitation Group.
