James W. Carter, Sr., age 54, of Fulton, IL, passed away Friday September 16, 2022, at Clinton Mercy Hospital. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, September 24 at Preston Town Hall in Preston, Iowa from 12pm to 4pm. Family and friends are invited to share in Jim’s life at lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
Jim was born August 22, 1968 in Maquoketa, IA, the son of Joseph “Bill” and Joyce (Hansen) Carter. He attended Maquoketa schools, graduating with the class of 1986. Jim went right to work in the concrete business serving as a foreman. Over the course of a career that included concrete work on runways in the Aleutian Islands, Jim became quite the expert. He could feel the quality of concrete work, simply by walking on it.
In his younger years, Jim enjoyed dart leagues and was a member of the local 4-H club, and throughout his life had a love of football. He’d spend hours watching college and pro ball, especially his beloved Dallas Cowboys. As he grew older, his new love was time spent with his grandkids, most notably playing with them in the pool. He was quite the cook and baker as well, and his family will miss his delicious cookies.
Jim is survived by his four sons, Ethan Gott, Jerrod (Ashley) Gott, James (Bonnie) Carter, and Terrence (Abby) Carter; 14 grandchildren; brother, Vern (Scott) Carter; sisters, Lori Rogers, Nancy Painter, and Paulette Carter; sister-in-law, Alenka Puzar; and longtime best friend, Cindy (Todd) Beattie. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Joyce; brother, Ron Carter; sisters, Connie Carter and Diane Carter; and brothers-in-law, Kenny Rogers and Bob Painter.
