Jacob “Jake” Hofman, age 98, of Savanna, Illinois, formerly of Herrick, Illinois and The Netherlands, passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at Big Meadows Nursing Home, Savanna. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Greenville, Illinois, with Bill Stringer officiating.
Jacob was born August 19, 1918 in Warfhuizen, Netherlands, the son of Teeuwes and Klazina (Holtrop) Hofman. He married Patricia (Pieterke) Buikema on February 25, 1941 in the Netherlands. Jake served as a private in the Dutch Army during World War II fighting for the Allied Forces.
In December of 1956, Jake and Patricia came to the U.S., where they settled in West Chicago, Illinois. Jake was a member of the Suburban Teamsters of Northern Illinois and worked as a driver for a disposal company for thirty-three years, retiring in 1985. Jake and Patricia then moved to Herrick, Illinois in 1991 to be close to family.
Jake was a member of the Jehovah’s Witness Congregation. He has always kept his Dutch citizenship, and his family was most important to him. Jake enjoyed spending time outdoors gardening, fishing, and walking his dog, “Patches." Jake believed that if you worked hard, you would always do well.
Jake will be dearly missed by his two children, Karen (Art) Goodlick of Herrick, Illinois and Ted (Marilyn) Hofman of Savanna; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Patricia; his oldest daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Dukes; a son-in-law, Tom Dukes and a granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer Hofman.
