Jackie “Jack” Thayer, 76, died Monday, April 9, 2007, at Eagle Point Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Clinton, Iowa. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2007 at the Law-Jones Funeral Home in Sabula, Iowa, with Reverend Michael Jones of York Baptist Church, Thomson, Illinois officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula, Iowa. Military rites will be accorded by the Sabula Veterans of Foreign War Post# 5234 and the American Legion. Visitation will be held from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home, prior to the service. A Memorial Fund has been established in Jack’s honor.
Jack was born on February 4, 1931, the son of Eugene and Florence (Bullis) Thayer in Mitchell, South Dakota. He graduated from Sabula High School with the class of 1949. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950 – 1953 during the Korean War. On June 17, 1952 Jack married Evelyn Hamilton in Dubuque, Iowa.
Jack was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad as an Engineer for thirty five years retiring in 1986. He was a member of the American Legion for fifty years. He enjoyed playing cards, camping, walking, hunting, fishing, going to the gambling boat, and the horse or dog race-track. He enjoyed his annual trips to LasVegas and traveling to California.
Jack is survived by his wife, Evelyn Thayer of Sabula, Iowa; two sons, Don (Deb) Thayer and Stephen Thayer both of Sabula; five grandchildren, Angie (Adam) Graves, Audrey Thayer, Bobbie Jo (Josh) Petersen, Stephen and Joshua Thayer; four great-grandchildren, Kadin and Kyson Graves and Jaide and Jerzie Petersen; one Uncle Wally Bullis of Savanna, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.
Jack is preceded in death by his parents; one brother LaVerne “Tuffy”; four sisters Marguerite Ingwerson and Lola Stoddard and two at birth.
