Irwin Bishop, age 88, of Elizabeth, Illinois, died Sunday, November 13, 2005 at the Elizabeth Nursing Home, Elizabeth, Illinois. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 16 at the United Methodist Church in Elizabeth. Burial will be in the Elizabeth Cemetery, with full Military Rites. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 15, at the Law-Jones Funeral Home, Elizabeth and one hour prior to service time at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be given in Irwin’s name for the Elizabeth Fire Department and E.M.T’s.
Irwin was born May 11, 1917, the son of Orville Martin “O.M.” and Gail Virginia (Irwin) Bishop, in Elizabeth, Illinois. He graduated from Elizabeth High School, Class of 1935. Irwin served in the 9th Air Defense Command of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. Prior to and after his military service Irwin worked for J.C. Penney’s
in Rockford, Illinois where he received his early business training. Later he moved back to Elizabeth to take over the operation of the family business after the death of his father. The family business, Bishop’s Busy Big Store celebrated their 100th anniversary this year, having been in business from 1905 to the present. On June 21, 1953 Irwin married Aimee C. (Dinsmore) in Galena, Illinois.
Irwin was a member of the United Methodist Church of Elizabeth, the Elizabeth American Legion Post, and was also a member of the Elizabeth Cavanaugh Masonic Lodge. Irwin was an avid gardener and enjoyed fishing, bird watching, and dancing.
Irwin will be deeply missed by his loving wife Aimee of Elizabeth; two sons, David (Deborah) Bishop of Decorah, Iowa; Gary Bishop of Dubuque, Iowa; one sister Gwendolyn L. Schabel of Birmingham, Alabama; five grandchildren, Forrest and Meredith Bishop of Decorah, Iowa; Adam Bishop of Dubuque, Iowa; Adrianne Bishop of Cresco, Iowa; Anya Bishop of Waterloo, Iowa. Four great grandchildren Kirsten and Megan Basten of Dubuque, Iowa; Gage Bishop of Dubuque, Iowa; Carter Bishop Courtney of Cresco, Iowa. Two nephews also survive, Dr. Frank M. Schabel III and Dr. Stephen I. Schabel both of Charleston, South Carolina. Irwin is preceded in death by his parents and one brother William C. Bishop.
