Irma A. Giddings, age 93, of Sabula, Iowa, died Saturday, October 16, 2010, at the Mercy Living Center North, Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Sabula. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 20, at Calvary Lutheran Church prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Lutheran Church, Sabula, in Irma’s memory.
Irma was born October 13, 1917, in Raymond, South Dakota, the daughter of William and Alvina (Boysen) Mehlberg. They moved to Iowa in 1923, living in the Miles and Preston area. Irma attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston where she was confirmed. She graduated from Preston High School with the Class of 1936. Irma was united in marriage to Robert E. Giddings on May 29, 1937, at St. John’s Church in Clinton, Iowa. Robert preceded her in death on January 20, 1995l
Irma was a charter member of the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula. She was also a charter member of the Missionary Society, now known as ELCA, where she served as president and secretary. She also served in the same capacity for the Martha Circle. Irma was a deacon for three years and sang in the church choir in her earlier years and taught Sunday School for over twenty five years. She was a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary and American Legion. In her spare time, Irma made quilts for Lutheran World Relief and also for her family. Since 1974, she has sponsored four children from foreign countries through Children’s International. Irma worked for many years at the Oxford Speaker Company in Sabula, retiring in 1979. She especially enjoyed the time spent with all of her family and reading her bible.
Irma is survived and lovingly remembered by one daughter, Barbara Widder of Clinton, Iowa; three sons, Roger Giddings of Sabula, Ronald (Beverly) Giddings of Sabula, and Richard (Sharon) Giddings of Rockford, Illinois; seventeen grandchildren, thirty – six great grandchildren, seven great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Irma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob; one son, Robert Giddings; one grandson, Randy Giddings; one brother and three sisters.
